BOOKLET DISCUSSES WHAT IS TREATMENT AND WHAT IS NOT, AND WHAT STANDARDS SHOULD BE ESTABLISHED IN GUIDING TREATMENT PROCEDURES.
Abstract
THE WORD TREATMENT HAS A DUAL MEANING, DEPENDING UPON WHO IS DOING THE DEFINING. FEW PENAL INSTITUTIONS CLAIM TO BE TREATING PRISONERS, THE AUTHOR POINTS OUT, ALTHOUGH EUPHEMISMS CAN BE FOUND FOR THE HOLDING ASPECTS OF PRISONS. THIS NECESSITATES A DIFFERENTIATION, THE BOOKLET ASSERTS, BETWEEN COMPULSION AND CONSENT IN TREATMENT. INDETERMINANCY IS ANOTHER SUSPECT FACTOR IN THE TREATMENT PROCESS. MEASURES MUST BE TAKEN TO ENSURE THAT INHUMANITY AND DEGRADATION DO NOT BECOME CONFUSED WITH TREATMENT. THE RAMIFICATIONS OF TREATMENT ARE DISCUSSED; IN THE OPEN, IN CUSTODIAL ESTABLISHMENTS, IN SENTENCING, AND IN PAROLE CONDITIONS....BDS
