Intended as a clinical resource, this volume presents 11 chapters that describe the five most prominent theories of drug treatment and explain how to translate each theory into clinical practice; the text also includes a chapter on emerging pharmacological approaches to drug treatment.
Abstract
The text is intended to provide a state-of-the-art reference to drug treatment as it is conceptualized and practiced in the United States today. The volume is intended for use by advanced undergraduate students; graduate students in clinical psychology, social work, and medicine; drug counselors in training; and treatment professionals. The authors are theoreticians and practitioners. The five theoretical approaches discussed are the 12-step, the psychodynamic, the behavioral, the marital/family, and the motivational approach. For each approach, a complementary clinical chapter uses case examples to demonstrate treatment techniques. The chapter on pharmacological treatments includes information on how best to integrate them with the psychosocial approaches. Figures, chapter reference lists, and index
