Abstract
This winter 2012 issue of Translational Criminology contains six articles dealing with research in the area of evidence-based criminal policy. The first article discusses how the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation in Montgomery County, MD, used research to improve pretrial services for defendants. The second article discusses how States can leverage research and analysis to fight crime, using the State of Maryland as a case study. The third article presents a case study of evidence-based policing in practice, highlighting the policies used by the Boston Police Department. The fourth article examines how the Jacksonville, FL, Sheriff's Office used the results from a problem-oriented, hot spots policing experiment to improve its crime reduction efforts. The fifth article examines whether the public health perspective on crime is a better avenue for translating research into practice. The sixth article discusses the need for criminal justice stakeholders to pursue a focused and scientific crime prevention agenda. Additional sections of this issue of Translational Criminology include Research Projects and Upcoming Events; An Eye on the Future, which presents current research projects undertaken by students at the Center for Evidence-Based Crime Policy; and Recent Publications.
