This article examines the background and preparation of police leaders as they relate to transformational leadership -- leaders who are able to envision, to see the interaction between organization and environment as a single entity, and to project this view into the future.
Abstract
A profile of police executives, derived from a 1982-1983 study of 500 subjects, indicates that they are veterans with nearly 25 years police experience, are better educated than their predecessors, value executive development training, and view the maintenance of positive department-community relations as an important part of their role. These leadership qualities can be further enhanced by increased attention to four areas of police leader preparation: a varied range of police and managerial experience, increased levels of formal education, increased professional development, and greater involvement with community and other groups outside law enforcement. 1 chart and 8 footnotes.
