The author discusses training programs for citizens and professionals for dealing with the problem of elder abuse/inadequate care.
Abstract
A two-day course had three objectives: 1) Creating an awareness of elder abuse/inadequate care; 2) Dealing with a working definition of elder abuse/inadequate care; and 3) Using available skills in working with clients, caregivers, and staff, given the current lack of statutory policies and guidelines. The trainer provided basic facts, statistics, and research findings, as well as clarifications of morally perplexing issues. Programs developed subsequently featured combinations of synergogic, pedagogic, and andragogic teaching styles. As participants learned and shared experiences, they built a foundation from which to draw upon to deal with specific cases and the attendant feelings of frustration, with few legal directives. 1 reference
