This manual is designed for use by domestic violence programs affiliated with the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV) for the purpose of training direct service staff and volunteers.
Abstract
The first section covers awareness issues, including a background to the battered women's movement, a discussion of sexism and violence against women, clarification of myths and facts which perpetuate victim blaming, and the effects of domestic violence on children. Counseling issues discussed in the manual are based on a feminist approach toward helping victims of domestic violence, and include empowerment and options counseling, advocacy, cultural and lifestyle issues, skills development, community resources, medical issues, drug and alcohol abuse in relation to domestic violence, mental health concerns, counseling issues for children and adolescents and for couples, and shelters for battered women. Legal issues which have ramifications for organizations dealing with domestic violence involve civil remedies, criminal remedies, child abuse reporting requirements, elder abuse, issues related to child custody and divorce, confidentiality, and legal advocacy. The manual also covers program-related topics and self-defense issues.
