This kit provides materials for the instructor and participants to use in a curriculum designed to train correctional supervisors for their responsibilities.
Abstract
The goals for the 4 1/2 days of training are to explore the nature of supervision and identify factors that influence a given situation; review "need to knows" of basic supervision; learn a model for handling problems and practice problem-solving skills; identify and practice strategies and skills to identify and resolve basic problems; analyze and explore cases similar to those likely to be encountered on the job; and apply knowledge and skills from the course to the job of supervisor through action planning. The strategies and skills for identifying and resolving basic problems address communication, performance, counseling and discipline, the handling of complaints, critical thinking, and the effective use of information and resources. The nine modules focus on the fundamentals of supervision; problem-solving; effective communications; conflict management; encouraging performance, coaching, and training; evaluating performance; counseling and discipline; handling complaints and dealing with angry/difficult people; and critical thinking/using resources. The participant's manual provides information on content and instructional exercises. The trainer's manual provides guidelines for presenting the material for each module. Overheads and handouts are for use at designated times in the training. The video supplied in the kit presents a "scene- setting" opening about the transition to supervisor, along with six vignettes on problem-solving, communication, conflict management, performance appraisal, counseling, and handling complaints.
