PROJECT WHICH GROUPED STUDENTS BY THE INTERPERSONAL MATURITY CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM AND ASSIGNED TEACHERS WITH MATCHING TEACHING STYLES.
Abstract
THE DIFFERENTIAL EDUCATION TREATMENT PROJECT UTILIZED THE INTERPERSONAL MATURITY LEVEL (I-LEVEL) CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM WHICH PLACES AN INDIVIDUAL IN ONE OF A SERIES OF SEVEN SUCCESSIVE STAGES OF INTERPERSONAL MATURITY. THE DIFFERENTIAL EDUCATION PROJECT (DEP) ATTEMPTED TO SOLVE THE DIFFERENT SCHOOL PROBLEMS OF VARIOUS DELINQUENT SUBTYPES BY MATCHING STUDENTS WITH SIMILAR NEEDS WITH TEACHERS WHO COULD FULFILL THESE NEEDS. THE PROGRAM WAS INTRODUCED AT TWO CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS, AND CAREFUL EVALUATIONS WERE PERFORMED. INSTITUTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS, GROUP IDENTITY, I-LEVEL DIAGNOSIS, AND PROGRAM CONTINUITY ARE CITED AS FOUR MAJOR PROBLEMS AT THE FIRST SCHOOL. WHEN MOVED TO THE SECOND SCHOOL THE PROJECT WAS DISCONTINUED BECAUSE OF FAILURE TO ADHERE TO THE RESEARCH DESIGN. THE AUTHOR NOTES THE IMPORTANCE OF CAREFUL PLANNING AT THE INITIAL STAGES OF THE PROJECT AND COMMUNICATION BETWEEN AGENCY AND STAFF THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE PROGRAM. SEVERAL GUIDELINES FOR PROGRAM PLANNING ARE OFFERED. A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF DIFFERENTIAL EDUCATION IS PRESENTED IN THE APPENDIX.
