This document presents the findings from the October 1993 survey of the time taken to process indictable cases in Great Britain's magistrates' courts.
Abstract
Survey findings showed that for 1993, the average time from offense to completion for indictable offenses fell from 129 days the previous year to 120 days. The 120 days includes 56 days from first listing to completion and 39 days between offense and charge or summons. The decrease in the number of days from first listing to completion is attributable to initiatives from the Home Office Working Group on Pre-Trial Issues and a decline in magistrates' court proceedings. The percentage of defendants charged increased to 91 percent in 1993, an increase of 4 percent over 1992 figures. During 1993, there were reductions in the average number of adjournments and average length of adjournments. The percentage of cases completed at first appearance rose by 1 percent to 21 percent. 6 figures, 9 tables, and 10 notes
