This bulletin presents the results from the October 1998 Time Intervals Survey of information on the duration of indictable cases completed in magistrates' courts in October 1998.
Abstract
The bulletin also includes a summary of all three 1998 Time Intervals Surveys combined. In October 1998 the average time from offense to completion for defendants in indictable cases fell to 122 days from 132 days in October 1997 and 130 days in October 1996. The average time from first listing to completion decreased to 55 days in October 1998 from 59 days a year earlier. There were an average of 2.4 adjournments in indictable cases in 1998 compared with 2.6 in each of the previous 3 years. Among defendants in indictable cases in youth courts, the average offense to completion time fell to 116 days in October 1998 from 129 days in October 1987 and 135 days in October 1996.
