This analysis of time intervals for criminal proceedings in magistrates' courts was based on all criminal cases completed in a week in June 1993 in Great Britain.
Abstract
During that time, the average time to process all criminal cases through magistrates' courts was 138 days, a decrease of 10 days since June 1992. Between 1992 and 1993, the average time from first listing to completion fell for all types of offenses, including indictable offenses, summary nonmotoring offenses, and summary motoring offenses. However, there was little change for offenders remanded in custody throughout their proceedings. The average length of adjournment for all types of offenses also fell. The analysis attributes these changes to initiatives from the Working Group on Pre-Trial Issues implemented in October 1992 and a reduction in magistrates' courts proceedings. 5 tables, 4 figures, and 8 notes
