A series of chapters by leading terrorism experts reviews the nature of domestic and international terrorism in and against Western Europe and assesses counter-terrorist strategies of individual European states and the European Economic Community as a whole.
Abstract
Separate chapters examine terrorism and counter-terrorist policies in Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, West Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Italy. This case study approach highlights important themes and contrasts between countries. Terrorism in each of the countries reflects the political climates and histories of the various countries. The counter-terrorist policies reflect the desire to maintain democratic institutions while countering terrorists' exploitation of political freedoms in democratic states. The concluding chapter outlines antiterrorism policy developments in the European Community (EC). These include the public naming of those States which EC members broadly consider to be sponsors of terrorism. The EC is also committed to legal remedies against terrorism, including measures to prevent the abuse of political asylum, the harmonizing of extradition agreements, and the promotion of the rapid exchange of information and regular exchanges of personnel between police and security forces. 120-item select bibliography, chapter notes.
