DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY AND OPERATION AT ELLIOTT HOUSE, A BRITISH HOME OFFICE APPROVED PROBATION HOSTEL FOR ADULT OFFENDERS WITHIN THE AGE RANGE OF 21-30 YEARS.
Abstract
THE HOUSE PROVIDES MILIEU THERAPY TO A MAXIMUM OF 15 RESIDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN PLACED ON PROBATION WITH A CONDITION OF RESIDENCE FOR A STATUTORY PERIOD OF 12 MONTHS. THE TREATMENT CONSISTS OF DEEPLY CARING INDIVIDUAL INVOLVEMENT, FORMAL AND INFORMAL GROUP PARTICIPATION AND THERAPY, AND INTENSIVE CASEWORK. FOUR CASE HISTORIES ARE USED TO ILLUSTRATE BOTH SUCCESSFUL AND UNSUCCESSFUL PROGRAM RESIDENTS. OF 83 PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS OVER THE 5-YEAR COURSE OF THIS EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM, 41.43 PERCENT (29) COMPLETED A SUCCESSFUL 12 MONTHS OF RESIDENCE, 58 PERCENT COMPLETED RESIDENCE AND 1 YEAR IN OPEN PROBATION SUCCESSFULLY, AND 37.35 PERCENT RETURNED TO PRISON EITHER DURING OR AFTER PROGRAM RESIDENCE.
