A DISCUSSION OF THE NATURE AND EXTENT OF THEFTS OF WORKS OF ART, INTERNATIONAL POLICE EFFORTS IN THE RECOVERY OF STOLEN ART, PREVENTION, EDUCATION AND INFORMATION OF THE PUBLIC, AND SECURITY MEASURES.
Abstract
THE SCALE OF THE PROBLEM OF STOLEN ART, THE KIND OF ART MOST OFTEN STOLEN, AND USUAL METHODS EMPLOYED BY ART THIEVES ARE FIRST DISCUSSED. THE ROLE OF THIEVES AND RECEIVERS OF STOLEN ART IN INTERNATIONAL TRAFFIC OF THESE WORKS IS ALSO EXPLORED. ACTIVITIES OF THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL POLICE ORGANIZATION (INTERPOL) UNDERTAKEN TO RECOVER STOLEN ART AND PREVENT FUTURE THEFTS ARE DESCRIBED. TYPICAL RECOVERY MEASURES INCLUDE NOTIFYING THE POLICE FORCES OF INTERPOL-AFFILIATED COUNTRIES OF THE THEFT, AND PREVENTION MEASURES INCLUDE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC AND ART CONNOISSEURS REGARDING WORKS OF ART.
