Abstract
THE TEXAS JUDICIAL COUNCIL IS THE STATE AGENCY WHICH COLLECTS CASELOADS DATA FOR DISTRICT, APPELLATE, COUNTY, MUNICIPAL, AND JUSTICE OF THE PEACE COURTS. THIS REPORT CONSISTS OF TABLES PRESENTING SUCH DATA BY GEOGRAPHIC REGION. IN 1977 THE TEXAS SUPREME COURT DELIVERED 84 DECIDING OPINIONS, AND DISPOSED OF 717 APPLICATIONS FOR WRITS OF ERROR FROM THE COURT OF CIVIL APPEALS. THE COURT OF CRIMINAL APPEALS, THE HIGHEST STATE COURT FOR CRIMINAL CASES WROTE 2778 OPINIONS, 28 PERCENT MORE THAN IN 1976. TRIAL COURTS WERE UPHELD IN 74 PERCENT OF THE CASES; APPEALS WERE REVIEWED AND DISMISSED OR ABATED IN AN ADDITIONAL 10 PERCENT. THE COURTS OF CIVIL APPEALS WROTE 1,771 OPINIONS. THE 284 DISTRICT COURTS HAD A 5 PERCENT INCREASE IN CASES FILED FOR A TOTAL OF 356,042. NEW CRIMINAL CASES ROSE 6 PERCENT FROM 67,269 IN 1976 TO 71, 839 IN 1977. CRIMINAL CASES ACCOUNTED FOR 20 PERCENT OF TOTAL NEW CASES FILED IN 1977. OF THESE 21 PERCENT INVOLVED BURGLARY, 21 PERCENT THEFT, 6 PERCENT EACH FOR ROBBERY AND FELONY, DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE, AND 13 PERCENT DRUG OFFENSES. IN COUNTY COURTS CRIMINAL CASES CONSTITUTED 66 PERCENT OF THE 405,273 NEW CASES. PROPERTY OFFENSES COMPRISED THE BULK OF THESE CASES. A DIRECTORY OF COURT PERSONNEL IS INCLUDED. (GLR)
