A STATISTICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE 325 JAILS IN TEXAS ANALYZED BY THE 24 REGIONAL STATE PLANNING ORGANIZATIONS FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE PLANNERS.
Abstract
THE TASK FORCE ON CORRECTIONS RECOGNIZED THAT JAILS AND OTHER LOCAL MISDEMEANANT INSTITUTIONS MUST NECESSARILY BE BROUGHT UNDER THE ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROL OF CORRECTIONS AGENCIES IN ORDER TO REMEDY CRITICALLY DEFICIENT PHYSICAL FACILITIES, PERSONNEL SHORTAGES, AND OTHER PROBLEM AREAS. REGIONALIZATION OF STATE MISDEMEANANT CORRECTIONS IS AN APPROACH TO IMPROVEMENT. AN OVERVIEW OF THE STATE, COMPARING TEXAS WITH NATIONAL AVERAGES, COMPARISON AMONG THE 24 REGIONAL PLANNING AREAS OF THE STATE, COMPARISON AMONG THE 23 STANDARD METROPOLITAN AREAS, COMPARISON AMONG CITIES WITH OVER 25,000 POPULATION, COMPARISON AMONG CITIES WITH UNDER 25,000 POPULATION, DISCUSSION OF CONTRASTS AMONG THE 24 REGIONAL PLANNING AREAS, AND INDIVIDUAL STATISTICAL SUMMARIES COMPARING THE JAILS AND PRISONERS WITHIN EACH OF THE 24 REGIONAL PLANNING AREAS.
