Abstract
The recent history of terrorism in various regions of the world is outlined and a chapter identifies the risk that travelers and businesspeople will become terrorist targets. Other chapters review the religious roots of terrorism, kinds of terrorism, and characteristics of terrorists. A chapter on how to avoid crime and terrorism provides an introduction to security concepts, techniques for avoiding crime in the street and at home, and the development of effective travel strategies. Another chapter focuses on how to cope as a victim of a terrorist kidnapping. A chapter on crisis planning management covers risk assessments, security planning, individual and family security plans, and the formulation of policy. The concluding section focuses on post-crisis coping techniques, particularly techniques for dealing with psychological effects. Materials in the appendix cover crisis management, communication during a crisis, hostage families, psychological consultation, post-crisis evaluation, evacuation, crisis-management training, hostage negotiation, emergency power-of-attorney authorization, and ransom payments and extortion demands.
