Seventeen lectures and discussions from the 1979 International Seminar on Political Terrorism deal with area-specific terrorism, state terrorism, general terrorist tactics, and counterterrorism tactics.
Abstract
Papers on area specific-terrorism address a strategy for countering Palestinian terrorism, dealing with population support for terrorists in Israel's administered territories, and handling political terrorism in West Germany. General papers on the nature of terrorism consider the distinction between guerrilla warfare and terrorism, terrorism-prone countries and conditions, and the practical problems of the terrorist organization. Discussions of terrorist tactics focus on state terrorism, the Soviet Union's support of terrorism, international cooperation among terrorist groups, and nuclear terrorism. Papers that address counterterrorism tactics consider how to attack terrorist groups at their centers, desensitization of the public to terrorist attacks, retaliation against supporting states, policy on negotiating with terrorists holding hostages, and government response to terrorist nuclear threats. One paper addresses the impact of mass media on terrorists, supporters, and the public at large. Chapter footnotes.
