A STUDY OF THE DOUKHOBORS, A FANATICAL CANADIAN SECT USING TERRORISM IN THE NAME OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM, IS BASED ON POLICE RECORDS AND SECT SOURCES.
Abstract
A CANADIAN REPORTER TRACES THE HISTORY OF THE DOUKHOBORS FROM THEIR EMIGRATION FROM RUSSIA AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY UNTIL 1963. SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE SONS OF FREEDOM DOUKHOBORS AND VARIOUS PROTEST GROUPS AND RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONS (I.E., THE KLU KLUX KLAN AND BLACK MUSLIMS) ARE DISCUSSED. THE BOOK EXPLORES THE ORGANIZATION, HABITS, CUSTOMS, PSYCHOLOGY, AND BELIEFS OF THE COMMUNITY WHICH IS NOTED FOR BOMBING, ARSON, NUDISM, AND TERRORISM. THE DIFFICULTIES OF THE POLICE IN DEALING WITH THE DOUKHOBORS, THE INABILITY TO GET EVIDENCE FOR TRIALS, AND THE PROTECTION OFFERED BY CLAN SECRECY ARE DESCRIBED, ALONG WITH THE METHODS THAT FINALLY ALLOWED THE POLICE TO PENETRATE THE ORGANIZATION. THE DIFFICULTIES IN ENFORCING THE LAW, PARTICULARLY CONCERNING EDUCATION OF CHILDREN, REGISTRATION OF MARRIAGES, AND BIRTH AND DEATH REGISTRATIONS ARE EXPLAINED AS THE PLAN FOR PENETRATION AND CONTAINMENT OF THE GROUP UNFOLDS. FINALLY, SUGGESTIONS FOR BREAKING THE CYCLE OF TERRORISM ARE PRESENTED. THEY INCLUDE REMOVING CHILDREN IN THE SECT, WHO ARE TAUGHT FROM BIRTH TO DISTRUST SOCIETY, FROM THEIR PARENTS. PHOTOGRAPHS AND AN INDEX ARE INCLUDED. (RFC)
