In Australia, the four groups that are associated with the private security industry (PSI) are contractors, self- providers and users, consumers, and equipment suppliers and manufacturers; the PSI provides services including access control systems, alarm equipment, armored car services, home and car alarm installation, security guards, 24-hour monitoring and central station operators, and various physical barriers and protective devices.
Abstract
Technology in the PSI can be divided into physical and electronic protection. Electronic alarm systems include local alarms and monitored alarm systems. The most commonly used methods of detection are passive infrared detectors, microwave units, photo electric beams, and closed-circuit television. The Australian Security Industry Association, Ltd. (ASIAL), the largest industry institute, has been in the forefront of setting standards and is a representative of the Standards Association of Australia. The most significant problems facing the PSI is the too-rapid growth of the security industry which is failing to consolidate its advances, the inability of the PSI and the general business community to protect themselves from crime, and the lack of information exchange between all the organizations collecting data on criminal activity. 2 references
