DOCUMENTED RESULTS OF THE FIRST YEAR'S EFFORTS OF THIS PROGRAM DESIGNED TO RECOMMEND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS FOR DOOR AND WINDOW SYSTEMS OF PRIVATE RESIDENCES AND LIGHT COMMERCIAL STRUCTURES.
Abstract
THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROGRAM IS TO 'HARDEN' THESE STRUCTURES TO RESIST PRESENT METHODS OF ATTACK USED BY BOTH AMATEUR AND PROFESSIONAL BURGLARS. IN THE FIRST YEAR OF THE PROGRAM, MAJOR EFFORTS INCLUDED, BUT WERE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING: FIRST, THE CHARACTERIZATION OF BUILDING SECURITY THREATS. THIS INCLUDED RATING MAN'S PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES (E.G., SHOULDER IMPACT) AND HIS CAPABILITIES, USING TOOLS (E.G., PRY BAR, PIPE WRENCH) WHEN ATTEMPTING SURREPTITIOUS ENTRY. SECONDLY, THE PROGRAM CONCENTRATED ON SINGLE WOODEN EXTERIOR DOORS (EVALUATION OF THE MOST CRITICAL THREAT AND ITS POINT OF APPLICATION) AND THE EVALUATION OF DOOR ATTACHMENTS (I. E., HINGES AND LOCKS). THIRDLY, THE FRAMING SURROUNDING THE SINGLE WOODEN DOOR WAS INVESTIGATED AND TESTED (I.E., CONSTRUCTION, STIFFNESS, STRIKER PLATE ASSEMBLY). NEXT, AN EXTENSIVE TESTING PROGRAM INTO THE RESISTANCE CAPABILITIES OF LOCKS WAS UNDERTAKEN. AND FINALLY, THE TESTING OF SLIDING GLASS DOORS AND WINDOWS WAS BEGUN. THIS REPORT DISCUSSES THE HISTORY OF THE PROJECT, THE APPROACH TAKEN IN ITS PERFORMANCE, A DEFINITION OF SECURITY THREATS, A DEFINITION OF DOOR SYSTEM RESISTANCE PARAMETERS, A SUMMARY OF TEST RESULTS, A STATEMENT OF RESISTANCE PARAMETERS, A SUMMARY OF TEST RESULTS, A STATEMENT OF THE STANDARDS DEVELOPED THUS FAR, A DESCRIPTION OF THE EQUIPMENT AND PERSONNEL REQUIREMENTS FOR A CERTIFICATION LABORATORY AND A DESCRIPTION OF THE SECOND YEAR EFFORT. THE APPENDICES CONTAIN AN EXTENSIVE AND DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE TESTING METHODOLOGY UTILIZED AND TEST RESULTS FOUND DURING THE FIRST PROJECT YEAR. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
