Abstract
Beginning with a description to the facilities of the Collin County Juvenile Detention Center the article describes the efforts of the medical and corrections staff to develop a comprehensive medical treatment program for juvenile offenders committed to the facility. The author presents information developed from interviews with the Facility Administrator, the Clinical Coordinator, and the Facility Superintendent. The medical treatment program developed by the staff includes parental involvement with the child’s treatment, the education of parents and offenders regarding medical conditions, provision of information to parents regarding postrelease care for children, round the clock medical staff at the facility, and a staff training program that includes an officer in-service training which was developed to educate staff regarding diabetes, suicide, tuberculosis, and environmental emergencies.
