A CORPORATE SECURITY DIRECTOR FOR A MANUFACTURING COMPANY OUTLINES THE BASIC STEPS IN PLANNING, PRODUCING, AND PRESENTING A SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE AUDIOVISUAL PROGRAM.
Abstract
AUDIOVISUALS ARE GOOD TEACHING AIDS BECAUSE THEY HOLD THE ATTENTION OF AN AUDIENCE BY EMPHASIZING ONE PORTION OF A SUBJECT WHILE THE TOPIC IS EXPLAINED FURTHER IN WORDS, THEY HELP CLARIFY DETAILED INFORMATION OR MATERIAL THAT IS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND, AND THEY CAN OVERCOME TIME AND SPACE LIMITATIONS. A 2 X 2-INCH SLIDE PROGRAM PROVIDES FOR FLEXIBILITY AND EASE OF PREPARATION, AND THE INVESTMENT IN A SLIDE PROGRAM CAN BE RECOVERED THROUGH SAVINGS ACHIEVED BY ELIMINATING THE NEED FOR A SPEAKER ON OCCASIONS WHEN THE PRESENTATION IS MADE. A PROJECTOR CONTAINING A BUILT-IN REAR SCREEN RESEMBLING A TELEVISION SCREEN WORKS WELL FOR SELF-TRAINING SLIDE OR TAPE PROGRAMS. THE FIRST STEP TO PREPARING A PROGRAM IS TO DEFINE THE OBJECTIVE AND EXAMINE THE AUDIENCE. A PLANNING BOARD CAN BE CONSTRUCTED TO HOLD INDEX CARDS ON WHICH ONE CAN LIST CONCEPTS TO BE PRESENTED IN THE PROGRAM; CARDS CAN BE ARRANGED IN SEQUENCE AND ADJUSTED AS NEEDED. ONCE THE OUTLINE IS ASSEMBLED ON THE PLANNING BOARD, THE WRITING OF THE SCRIPT CAN BEGIN. MANY COMPANIES EMPLOY ARTISTS TO PREPARE PROFESSIONAL LOOKING SLIDES, BUT IF ARTISTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE IT IS POSSIBLE TO PRODUCE SLIDES WITHOUT TOO MUCH DIFFICULTY. KODAK EKTACHROME 400 FILM FOR COLOR SLIDES IS A HIGH SPEED FILM CAPABLE OF PRODUCING AVAILABLE LIGHT PHOTOGRAPHS IN A VARIETY OF LIGHTING CONDITIONS BOTH INDOORS AND OUTDOORS. ARTWORK SHOULD BE KEPT AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE, AND PROGRESSIVE DISCLOSURE, INVOLVING A SERIES OF SLIDES WITH EACH ONE ADDING INFORMATION, IS AN EFFECTIVE TECHNIQUE. LETTERING SHOULD BE CLEAR AND APPLIED TO COLORED BACKGROUNDS. THE NARRATOR SHOULD REHEARSE HIS SCRIPT, AT LEAST ONCE WITH AN AUDIENCE. IDEAS FOR MORE COMPLEX PRESENTATIONS ARE ALSO SUGGESTED. (KJM)
