This article describes development and implementation of school security surveys.
Abstract
Development and implementation of security measures provides to the community good-faith evidence that promoting and preserving a safe learning environment is central to a school's mission. A crime prevention security survey should address issues of organization, procedural security, and physical security. The article provides guidance on constructing a security survey, including specific questions to be asked, and how to tailor a survey to the needs of a school or district. A narrative survey of each school should determine and specify budget limitations and the desired timetable for completing the security audit before hiring personnel. The article suggests: criteria for evaluating persons to conduct a survey; how to judge survey results; how to share information with the superintendent of schools, the school board, individual school administrators, and local enforcement; and how to implement a survey, including coordination with such organizations as the National Guard and the local Federal Emergency Management Agency representative.
