THIS ARTICLE, AN IN-DEPTH DESCRIPTION OF THE THREE TASK FORCES OF THE ILLINOIS STATE POLICE, OUTLINES THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THESE SPECIAL POLICE UNITS.
Abstract
THE MAIN DUTY OF THE UNITS IS TRUCK WEIGHT MONITORING. OVERWEIGHT TRUCKS CONCERN ILLINOIS LAWMAKERS FOR TWO REASONS: THEY ENDANGER MOTORISTS AND RUIN ROADS. TASK FORCE TROOPERS FINE OVERWEIGHT TRUCKS AND REMOVE THEM FROM THE ROAD UNTIL ILLEGAL EXCESS WEIGHT IS OFF-LOADED. MONEY FROM THE FINES IS TURNED OVER TO COOK COUNTY DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS. OTHER ASSIGNMENTS OF TASK FORCE MEN INCLUDE SERVING IN HIGH-INTENSITY SPEEDER PATROL WITH HAND-HELD RADAR UNITS AND IN ROVING RIOT SQUADS. UNLIKE AVERAGE TROOPERS, MEMBERS OF THE TASK FORCES ARE DRILLED WITH RIOT EQUIPMENT, AND ONE TASK FORCE HAS BEEN USED SUCCESSFULLY AT PRISON RIOTS IN JOLIET AND PONTIAC, ILL. UNITS ARE COHESIVE, TRAINED, ACCUSTOMED TO WORKING TOGETHER, AND THE DUTY HOURS 6 A.M. TO 2 P.M. ARE POPULAR. PHOTOGRAPHS ILLUSTRATE THE ARTICLE. (MJW)
