Abstract
A TYPICAL HOMEOWNER AND A LOCAL POLICE OFFICER WALK THROUGH A SIMULATED HOME BURGLARY INSPECTION TO EMPHASIZE COMMON SECURITY DEFICIENCIES AND TO INDICATE THE BEST APPLICABLE REMEDIES. THE PROPER USE OF PADLOCKS AND DEADBOLT AND KEY-IN-THE-KNOB LOCKS IS ILLUSTRATED, AND A VARIETY OF OTHER MEASURES ARE RECOMMENDED, INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING: (1) THE USE OF SOLID WOOD AND SECURE HINGES ON DOORS; (2) PINNING SASH WINDOWS, ADUSTING AND SECURING SLIDING GLASS WINDOWS AND DOORS, AND MAINTAINING CASEMENT WINDOWS; AND (3) SECURING GARAGE DOORS, BOTH FROM WITHOUT AND WITHIN. THE MARKING OF VALUABLES WITH IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS IS ALSO RECOMMENDED. (KBL)
