DISCUSSES FIVE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BREATH-TESTER DEVICES WHOSE PERFORMANCE STANDARDS ARE BEING DEVELOPED AT THE NATIONAL BUREAU OF STANDARDS.
Abstract
THE DEVICES BEING TESTED ARE AN EVIDENTIAL BREATH TESTER USED TO OBTAIN COURTROOM EVIDENCE, SCREENING BREATH TESTERS TO BE CARRIED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS FOR ROAD-SIDE TESTS OF SUSPECTED DRUNK DRIVERS, BREATH-TEST CALIBRATING UNITS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE SAMPLES OF A KNOWN ALCOHOL CONCENTRATION FOR CALIBRATING BREATH TESTERS, REMOTE BREATH COLLECTORS USED TO COLLECT BREATH SAMPLES FOR LATER ANALYSIS IN THE LABORATORY, AND A PASSIVE BREATH TESTER USED TO COLLECT A BREATH SAMPLE FROM IN FRONT OF A SUSPECT'S FACE WITHOUT HIS COOPERATION. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS MEASURE HOW WELL THE EQUIPMENT WORKS, LEAVING THE WAY OPEN FOR INNOVATION AND CONTINUED IMPROVEMENT.
