This manual provides information on working with and advocating for developmentally disabled victims of sexual assault and is intended for use by parents, teachers, residential facility staff, counselors, and others involved with these survivors.
Abstract
The information is intended for use in helping someone through a sexual assault crisis or in teaching clients about prevention and safety measures to use in case of an attempted assault. Individual sections include definitions, statistics on the incidence of sexual assault, a list of behavioral signs that someone has been assaulted, and an outline of the rape trauma syndrome. Guidelines are also given on how to respond to a disclosure, how to handle the issue of confidentiality, and the steps involved in reporting an assault. Information is also given about interacting with the police, what to expect at the hospital, and how to handle court proceedings. Sources of financial assistance for victims, the feelings that caretakers are likely to experience and how to handle them, and resource agencies in the Los Angeles area presented.
