INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED VOLUNTEERS WHO WORK AS COUNSELORS AND SPONSORS WITH INSTITUTIONALIZED JUVENILE OFFENDERS, DETAINEES, AND PERSONS IN NEED OF SUPERVISION IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
BRIEF PROFILES OF THE CLIENTELE OF EACH FACILITY OPERATED FOR JUVENILES BY THE DISTRICT'S INSTITUTIONAL CARE SERVICES DIVISION ARE OFFERED, TOGETHER WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF THE JOBS VOLUNTEERS MAY PERFORM (INDIVIDUAL SPONSORS, HOBBY/INTEREST GROUP LEADERS, TUTORS, COTTAGE SPONSORS). EACH FACILITY'S SPECIFIC NEEDS FOR VOLUNTEERS ARE OUTLINED. PROCEDURES TO BE FOLLOWED BY VOLUNTEERS IN GETTING STARTED (INTERVIEWS, REGISTRATION, TRAINING, ASSIGNMENT) AND IN PERFORMING THEIR JOBS ARE PRESENTED, AS ARE GUIDELINES PERTAINING TO RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF MEMBERS AND BETWEEN VOLUNTEERS AND CLIENTS. ALSO INCLUDED ARE DISCUSSIONS OF WHAT VOLUNTEERS CAN OFFER IN A CORRECTIONAL SETTING (FRESH IDEAS, LESS STRUCTURED RELATIONSHIPS WITH CLIENTS, SPECIAL SKILLS); THE FUNCTIONS OF COUNSELORS; SPECIAL TECHNIQUES FOR WORKING WITH GROUPS OF ADOLESCENT DELINQUENTS (LIKING PEOPLE AND PAYING ATTENTION TO THEM, GETTING TO KNOW CLIENTS, BEING ADULT AND STAYING IN CHARGE, SAYING NO, NOT EXPECTING EGO GRATIFICATION FROM RELATIONSHIPS WITH CLIENTS, NOT MAKING PROMISES THAT CANNOT BE KEPT, MAKING ACTIVITIES A CHALLENGE, NOT PREACHING, ETC.); AND FACILITY RULES THAT AFFECT VOLUNTEERS.
