Provides an overview of the firearm check procedures in each of the States and their interaction with the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) operated by the FBI. It is a continuation of ongoing data collection efforts that focus on the number of applications received, the number rejected, the reason(s) for the rejection, and other processing information associated with each application to purchase a firearm. This is one of a series of reports published from the BJS Firearm Inquiry Statistics (FIST) project, which is part of the BJS National Criminal History [records] Improvement Program (NCHIP). The purpose of this project is to develop statistics that describe procedures being followed in each of the States, to implement the Brady Act and other State legislation relating to presale firearm checks.
