TABULATION OF WAGES AND BENEFITS F0R OVER 1000 POLICE DEPARTMENTS IN THE UNITED STATES.
Abstract
POLICE SALARIES AND BENEFITS VARY WIDELY IN THE UNITED STATES. CLASSIFICATION OF CITIES AND TOWNS BY POPULATION FACILITATES COMPARISON OF THE VARIOUS ITEMS. THE STUDY TABULATES MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM SALARIES FOR RANKS FROM PATROLMEN THROUGH CHIEF, IN ADDITION TO INDICATING WHETHER THE DEPARTMENT OFFERS LONGEVITY, OVERTIME, OR SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL PAY. IT NOTES THE LENGTH OF THE NORMAL WORK WEEK, AND WHETHER OR NOT THE OFFICERS ARE GRANTED CIVIL SERVICE STATUS. THE LENGTH OF THE ANNUAL VACATION, THE NUMBER OF PAID HOLIDAYS AND SICK DAYS, AS WELL AS BENEFITS SUCH AS CLOTHING ALLOWANCES, HOSPITALIZATION, AND LIFE INSURANCE, ARE GIVEN FOR EACH DEPARTMENT. PENSION POLICIES SUCH AS PERCENTAGES OF SALARY AFTER VARYING TERMS OF SERVICE, MINIMUM AGE REQUIRED TO QUALIFY, AND COMPULSORY RETIREMENT AGE ARE DETAILED. THE SURVEY INDICATES THE NUMBER OF UNIFORMED POLICE OFFICERS AND DETECTIVES EMPLOYED BY EACH DEPARTMENT AND WHETHER THEY ARE REQUIRED TO BE RESIDENTS OF THE JURISDICTION. THIS COMPLETE DOCUMENTATION OF EMPLOYMENT DATA WILL BE AN INVALUABLE RESEARCH AID FOR ANY STUDENT OF POLICE WAGES AND BENEFITS. (SNI ABSTRACT)
