This study describes the recidivism research done in 67 correctional agencies and places research done in Massachusetts in the context of the overall research being conducted in the United States and Canada.
Abstract
The research was conducted in terms of both official definitions of recidivism used by the various agencies cooperating and the manner in which those definitions are operationalized. Twenty of the responding agencies conducted no recidivism research, 14 collected data only on prior incarcerations of the commitment population, and 33 conducted followup research on returns after release from the agency. Agencies show such differences in their types of returns and sources of information that comparison with the data collected and published annually by Massachusetts is difficult. A detailed description of the research on returns is shown. 6 tables and sample questionnaire. (Author abstract modified)
