Abstract
An overview of intermediate sanctions encompasses the role of intermediate sanctions in the national drug control strategy, the definition of intermediate sanctions ("a punishment option that is considered on a continuum to fall between traditional probation and traditional incarceration"), and issues related to intermediate sanctions. A section on intermediate sanctions at the State and local levels contains a review of a range of intermediate sanctions and related innovative tools, as well as how they are being used by State and local governments. Topics include technologies to monitor compliance with conditions, shock incarceration programs, intensive supervision probation, day reporting centers, house arrest and home confinement conditions, the expanded use of fines, community service, restitution, and mandatory driver's license suspension. State efforts to expand sentencing options and intermediate sanctions are discussed. A section on intermediate sanction activities lists activities by OJP bureaus and the National Institute of Corrections. The concluding section describes the activities of and how to contact various resources for developing intermediate sanctions programs.
