LOW REPORTED ABSCONDENCE RATES SUGGEST INITIAL SUCCESS IN ALLOWING ADULT MALE INMATES UNSUPERVISED HOME VISITS.
Abstract
FURLOUGHS SERVE AS AN EXCELLENT MEDIUM THROUGH WHICH TO GUIDE THE BEHAVIOR OF INMATES. IN ADDITION, THEY SEEMINGLY MAXIMIZE AN INMATE'S CHANCES OF REHABILITATION BY PRESERVING FAMILY TIES AND ALLOWING HIM TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SERVICES AVAILABLE FROM THE VARIOUS COMMUNITY AGENCIES. TO THE ADMINISTRATOR, THE HOME FURLOUGH PROGRAM PROVIDES A MUCH MORE VALID MEASURE OF AN INMATE'S READINESS FOR RELEASE THAN THE LIMITED OBSERVATIONS MADE WITHIN THE ARTIFICIAL SETTING OF THE CLOSED INSTITUTION. REFERENCES ARE CONTAINED IN THE SURVEY. AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED
