THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF MEDICOLEGAL PATHOLOGY IN ENGLAND, AND ITS CLOSE LINKS WITH THE CORONER SYSTEM ARE OUTLINED.
Abstract
SOME IMPORTANT CHANGES WHICH HAVE OCCURRED IN THE POST-WAR PERIOD ARE REVIEWED. AMONG THESE CHANGES ARE MORTUARY ACCOMMODATION, CHANGING ATTITUDES TOWARD COURT ATTENDANCE BY MEDICAL WITNESSES, AND THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE FORENSIC PATHOLOGIST AND CORONER TO THE MEDICAL PROFESSION IN GENERAL. CURRENT RECRUITMENT TO THE SPECIALTY IS DISCUSSED, WITH EMPHASIS ON THE NEED FOR A FULL-TIME, SALARIED, FORENSIC PATHOLOGICAL SERVICE TO IMPROVE CAREER PROSPECTS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
