Abstract
STATISTICAL DATA FOR THIS STUDY WERE ACQUIRED THROUGH THE ADMINISTRATION OF A QUESTIONNAIRE TO 779 WARDS RESIDING IN ONTARIO TRAINING SCHOOLS. INITIAL PAGES IN THIS VOLUME BRIEFLY DESCRIBE THE BASIC RESEARCH DESIGN, SAMPLE POPULATION, QUESTIONNAIRE, PROCEDURE, AND DATA PROCESSING. ALSO DISCUSSED ARE CHECKS FOR CONSISTENCY AND RELIABILITY. A COMPARISON BETWEEN THE TRAINING SCHOOL POPULATION AND RESULTS FROM A SURVEY OF AREA COMMUNITY SCHOOL CHILDREN REVEALS THAT THE PROPORTION OF PERSONS WHO REPORT HAVING HAD CONTACT WITH VARIOUS DRUGS IS HIGHER AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE ADMITTED TO TRAINING SCHOOL THAN AMONG STUDENTS IN THE COMMUNITY. REPORTED PRIOR DRUG INVOLVEMENT DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE CONFINED TO WARDS ASSIGNED TO ONE TRAINING SCHOOL, NOR TO ONE AGE GROUP, SEX, RELIGION, OR GRADE LEVEL. THERE ARE, HOWEVER, DIFFERENCES IN THE EXTENT OF DRUG USE WHICH ARE RELATED TO SPECIFIC INDIVIDUAL AND FAMILY FACTORS. APPENDIXES INCLUDE DEMOGRAPHIC DATA AND ADDITIONAL STATISTICAL FACTORS INVOLVED IN DRUG USE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
