DESIGNED FOR POLICE OFFICERS AND CUSTOMS OFFICIALS, THIS BOOKLET PRESENTS BASIC INFORMATION, SUPPLEMENTED BY DRAWINGS AND PHOTOGRAPHS, ABOUT ILLICIT DRUGS AND HOW TO DETECT THEM AT BORDER CROSSINGS AND OTHER PLACES.
Abstract
THE ILLICIT CULTIVATION OF THE OPIUM POPPY, CANNABIS, AND COCA SHRUB ARE DESCRIBED, AS WELL AS THE CHARACTERISTICS (SMELL AND APPEARANCE) OF NATURAL DRUGS. ILLICIT LABORATORIES FOR MAKING OPIUM, MORPHINE, AND HEROIN ARE DEALT WITH, AND THE CONCLUSION IS MADE THAT A STRONG SMELL, UTENSILS, AND EVIDENCE OF WHITISH SUBSTANCES MAY INDICATE THE PRESENCE OF SUCH A LABORATORY; PROCEDURES TO FOLLOW IN INVESTIGATING THIS POSSIBILITY ARE DETAILED. MEANS OF TRANSPORTING ILLICIT DRUGS AND HIDING PLACES FOR STORING THEM ARE HIGHLIGHTED. THESE INCLUDE THE USE OF CARS, AIRCRAFT, BOATS, AND DOMESTIC ANIMALS. IT IS ALSO NOTED THAT THE TWO MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF DRUG-SMOKING DENS ARE THE PRESENCE OF A VERY CHARACTERISTIC SMELL AND UTENSILS. THE SECTION ON DETECTION OF ADDICTS REVIEWS THEIR APPEARANCE, DISTINGUISHING MARKS, BEHAVIOR PATTERNS, HOW TO QUESTION THEM, AND MEASURES TO TAKE WHEN SEARCHING THEM. PROCEDURES TO FOLLOW IN QUESTIONING A PERSON SUSPECTED OF CARRYING DRUGS ARE OUTLINED, AND FINALLY, SYNTHETIC DRUGS AND OTHER PSYCHOTROPIC SUBSTANCES ARE DESCRIBED. (PRG)
