Abstract
The bulk of the material deals with juvenile delinquency and incorrigibility (status) referrals. Types of juvenile referral are shown, as are reasons for referral; severity of referral; and sex, age, ethnicity, and school status profiles. Data on first offenders, detention, probation, commitments, transfers, diversion programs, and placements are also included. In 1992, there were 27,624 referrals, involving 18,183 juveniles. These totals represent 10.4 percent and 4.7 percent increases respectively, since 1988; the numbers of juveniles and referrals peaked in 1990. Shoplifting was the most common reason for referral every year, accounting for 14.3 percent of referrals in 1992. Felony and misdemeanor theft combined accounted for 41.9 percent.
