Court orders dealt with by the probation service in England and Wales rose by 2 percent in 1997 to 118,000, the highest level ever, and the number of persons starting a probation order in 1997 was 3 percent above that in 1996.
Abstract
The number of people starting a community service order in 1997 (47,000) was 2 percent more than in 1996. About 19,000 persons started combination orders in 1997, compared to 17,000 in 1996 and representing a 10-percent increase. The number of probation officers in post decreased by 2 percent to 7,200 at the end of 1997, the lowest December figure since 1991.
