Abstract
BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON INDIAN POPULATION AND HEALTH PROBLEMS ARE FIRST DISCUSSED. CAUSES FOR SUICIDE AND ALCOHOLISM AMONG AMERICAN INDIANS ARE DETAILED, INCLUDING LOW-SELF-ESTEEM AND PROBLEMS OF TRANSITION FROM INDIAN TO NON-INDIAN CULTURE. SUICIDE PREVENTION METHODS AND ALCOHOL REHABILITATION RESOURCES AVAILABLE FOR AMERICAN INDIANS ARE LISTED. APPENDIXES INCLUDE POPULATION DATA ON AMERICAN INDIANS, AND A LISTING OF COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH CENTERS SERVING INDIAN AND ALASKAN NATIVES.
