This study collected empirical data on the substance use behaviors of 405 delinquent and homeless youths in San Francisco; the sample, selected from three youth-serving agencies, included all youths for whom complete medical histories and physical examinations were obtained between June and November 1990.
Abstract
Data secured within the context of medical examinations indicated that both delinquent and homeless youth used tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs at rates higher than the general adolescent population. Substance abuse and high-risk sexual behaviors made the youths vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases and HIV infection. It was determined that drug education and prevention programs must be tailored to meet the needs and lifestyles of delinquent and homeless youth since they do not have access to regular health care and that such programs must be provided within the broader context of adolescent health care. 28 references and 3 tables
