This document reviews recent literature on adolescent alcohol and other drug use within four minority racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. -- Asians, Blacks, Hispanics, and Native Americans.

Abstract

The first section summarizes knowledge about the prevalence and patterns of juvenile drug and alcohol use within these ethnic groups. The second section deals with use correlates, including peer and family influences, family structure, psychosocial factors, knowledge and attitudes toward use, socioeconomic status, and cultural values and identification. These factors may help to explain observed similarities and differences between groups. The document reviews evaluative research on prevention programs targeted at one or more ethnic groups. Finally, the paper addresses the prevention implications of these data. The document contains abstracts of relevant research studies and articles. 212 references
