Available evidence indicates that Asian American youth suffer less from drug-related problems than other ethnic groups; indirect evidence, however, suggests that the magnitude of alcohol and other drug problems among Asian American youth may be greater than what is commonly associated with the "model minority" stereotype and the tendency of this ethnic group to handle problems within the family rather than seek public treatment services.
Abstract
Asian Americans constitute about 2 percent of the U.S. population and represent one of the fastest growing immigrant groups. Studies and surveys are reported that indicate the nature and extent of alcohol and drug use by Asian American adults and youth and the resulting drug-related problems they encounter. Correlates of drug use among Asian Americans are examined that focus on physiological factors, sociocultural factors, acculturation, and risk factors. The authors note that prevention programs are needed for Asian American youth, even though these youth have fewer risk factors than other population groups. Abstracts of publications dealing with substance abuse by Asian Americans are included. 94 references
