A COLLECTION OF READINGS DESIGNED TO BRING TOGETHER VARIOUS FORMULATIONS OF SUBCULTURE THEORY THAT HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN SCATTERED OR FORGOTTEN.
Abstract
THE FIRST PART PRESENTS THE EARLIEST SYSTEMATIC FORMULATIONS OF SUBCULTURE AS A SOCIOLOGICAL CONCEPT. THE SECOND SECTION DISCUSSES THE BOUNDARIES OF SUBCULTURAL SYSTEMS. IT EXAMINES THE RELATIONSHIPS/OF ONE SUBCULTURE TO ANOTHER, OF A SUBCULTURE TO THE CULTURE OF ITS SOCIETY, AND OF INDIVIDUALS TO SUBCULTURES. PART THREE DISCUSSES THE CAUSATION OF SUBCULTURES, THE WAY THEY CHANGE, AND THE WAY THEY AFFECT INDIVIDUALS WHO COME IN CONTACT WITH THEM. THE FINAL SECTION PRESENTS SOME OF THE MORE RECENT FORMULATIONS OF SUBCULTURE THEORY. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
