This presentation summarizes the five volumes of a study designed to catalogue procedures to assist Canadian municipal police forces who wish to develop improved management information systems.
Abstract
Volume I develops the notion of management information systems (MIS) within the context of overall technological change and its impact on policing. It considers both the historical perspective and the future challenges of developing the new MIS technology for policing. Volume II describes some of the more important experiences with MIS in selected U.S. jurisdictions and draws key lessons for Canadian police departments. The MIS experiences of a number of Canadian police forces are outlined in Volume III. This volume also describes the results of a survey of large Canadian police forces and their interest in MIS. Finally, it concludes with a number of critical comments about the direction of MIS development in Canadian policing. Volume IV provides a catalog of procedures for developing MIS in a police environment. A master plan for developing an MIS is provided which recognizes that major changes in staffing and organization are required. The final volume contains technical design specifications for targeted information processing, a topic which was generally described in Volume IV. Each component is described in terms of inputs, outputs, and file interactions. A selected bibliography provides 169 listings, and sources of information for the study are appended, along with a listing of field visit sites. (Author abstract modified)
