DESCRIPTION OF THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF THE TREATMENT PROCESS OF EXPERIMENTAL DRUG TREATMENT CENTERS-DAYTOP VILLAGE, EXODUS HOUSE, TEEN CHALLENGE, AND ENCOUNTER.
Abstract
EXODUS HOUSE, A VOLUNTARY, NONSECTARIAN AGENCY FOR THE TREATMENT OF ADDICTS, OPERATES A COMPREHENSIVE, ABSTINENCE-ORIENTED TREATMENT FACILITY IN EAST HARLEM, NEW YORK CITY. THE THREE MAJOR COMPONENTS OF EXODUS HOUSE PROGRAM ARE - INTENSIVE TREATMENT, GENERAL ASSISTANCE TO ADDICTS WHO REQUEST HELP IN OBTAINING JOBS, WELFARE, HOUSING AND MEDICAL TREATMENT, AND A THERAPY PROGRAM AT GREEN HAVEN STATE PRISON. DAYTOP VILLAGE IS COMPRISED OF TWO RESIDENCES FOR MALE AND FEMALE DRUG ADDICTS. THIS STUDY CONCENTRATES ON THE STATEN ISLAND FACILITY. THE MAJORITY OF THE RESIDENTS AT DAYTOP ARE CAUCASIAN AND MORE THAN HALF OF THEM ARE ON PROBATION OR PAROLE. THE DAYTOP APPROACH IS PSYCHOLOGICAL AND TREATS ADDICTION AS A SYMPTOM OF A CHARACTER DISORDER. TEEN CHALLENGE, ON THE OTHER HAND, IS A VOLUNTARY EVANGELICAL ORGANIZATION WHICH REHABILITATES DRUG USERS THROUGH RELIGIOUS CONVERSION. THE ENCOUNTER PROGRAM'S MOST INTENSIVE ASPECT IS PREVENTION. IT ATTEMPTS TO REACH THE DRUG USER BEFORE THE HABIT RESULTS IN SERIOUS ADDICTION. FACILITIES AND STAFF MAKEUP OF EACH PROGRAM ARE DESCRIBED.
