STATISTICAL STUDY CONCLUDING THAT THERE IS NO REASON TO PUT FAITH IN THE FREQUENTLY STATED ASSUMPTION THAT MANY INMATES ARE GUILTY OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR WHILE ABSENT FROM PRISON.
Abstract
OF 311 INMATES ABSENT FROM THE KRAGSKOVHEDE PRISON IN DENMARK, ONLY 19 COMMITTED OFFENSES AFTER ESCAPING. SIX OF THEM COMMITTED OFFENSES WHILE OVERDUE BACK FROM AUTHORIZED ABSENCE, THREE WHILE ON FURLOUGH, ONE BOTH AFTER ESCAPING AND WHILE ON FURLOUGH, AND ONE BOTH WHILE ON FURLOUGH AND WHILE OVERDUE BACK FROM AUTHORIZED ABSENCE. THE AUTHOR REGARDS THESE FIGURES AS SO LOW THAT THE STATEMENT THAT INMATES ABSENT FROM PRISONS TEND TO BE GUILTY OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR IS NOT JUSTIFIED. --IN DANISH
