SURVEY OF SWEDISH POLICEMEN (908) AND POLICEWOMEN (301) REGARDING THEIR ATTITUDES TOWARD THE EMPLOYMENT OF WOMEN ON THE POLICE FORCE AND THE TYPES OF POLICE WORK TO WHICH THEY SHOULD BE ASSIGNED.
Abstract
THE SAMPLE INCLUDED 239 TRAINED POLICEWOMEN, 77 MALE GRADUATES OF THE POLICE ACADEMY, 62 FEMALE POLICE TRAINEES, 436 MALE POLICE TRAINEES AND 215 HIGHER-RANKING POLICEMEN. MOST OF THE WOMEN BELIEVED THAT NO LIMITS SHOULD BE PLACED ON THE ASSIGNMENTS GIVEN TO WOMEN ON THE FORCE AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD HAVE AS MUCH CONFIDENCE IN WOMEN LEADERS AS IN MEN. OF THE MEN, THE RECENT ACADEMY GRADUATES WERE THE GROUP MOST HOSTILE TO THE POLICEWOMEN. MOST OF THEM SAID THAT LIMITS SHOULD BE PUT ON THE ADMISSION OF WOMEN TO THE POLICE SCHOOL AND ON THE FIELDS OF WORK TO WHICH THEY WERE ASSIGNED. MOST OF THEM ALSO SAID THEY WOULD HAVE LESS CONFIDENCE IN WOMEN LEADERS THAN IN MEN. --IN SWEDISH
