The Indian province of Assam has been the scene of massive student unrest. Assam police leaders should be able to bring about changes in their philosophy to effectively handle student disorders which constantly threaten to paralyze the police themselves.
Abstract
Reasons for the student unrest include a history of student political involvement, limited economic opportunities, an irrelevant educational system, and overpopulation. Police failure in controlling student riots is examined, and a new set of policies and training procedures is suggested. An appendix gives a brief history of the Indian police. One note and 27 references are included. (Author abstract modified)
