THIS SOCIOLOGICAL RESEARCH PAPER OUTLINES THE SUFFICIENT CONDITIONS FOR IDENTIFYING POPULATION STRUCTURES OF WELL-BEING DRAWN FROM THE SOCIOLOGICAL LITERATURE.
Abstract
IN 1978 BURT AND OTHERS PROPOSED A CONCEPT OF THE STRUCTURE OF WELL-BEING COMPOSED OF DIMENSIONS OF WELL-BEING IN TERMS OF WHICH INDIVIDUALS PERCEIVED SATISFACTION WITH SPECIFIC CONDITIONS IN THEIR LIVES. THE PAPER DISCUSSES AN EXAMPLE THAT DEMONSTRATES THAT JORESKOG'S SUGGESTED SUFFICIENT CONDITIONS (1969) FOR IDENTIFYING UNKNOWN PARAMETERS IN A CONFIRMATORY FACTOR ANALYTIC MODEL WITH CORRELATED FACTORS WAS NOT SUFFICIENT. SUFFICIENT CONDITIONS FOR IDENTIFYING PARAMETERS IN THE CLASS OF MODEL USED BY BURT AND OTHERS TO ESTIMATE POPULATION STRUCTURES OF WELL-BEING FROM VARIOUS INDICATORS OF SATISFACTION ARE ANALYZED. THE SIX HYPOTHESES STATED IN BURT ET AL ARE THEN RECONSIDERED AND SIMILARLY SUPPORTED WHEN THEIR FINAL COVARIANCE MODEL IS RESTRICTED TO MEET SUFFICIENCY CONDITIONS GIVEN. TABLES, NOTES, AND REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--MJW)
